adinkra
Sankofa (bird)
Meaning
A Twi proverb meaning "Go back and get it," often extended as "It is not taboo to go back for what you forgot or left behind." It expresses that recovering valuable knowledge, values, or history from the past is not a step backward, and that moving forward well depends on doing so.

Cultural note
This is the naturalistic bird form of Sankofa, the version most consistently identified across sources as the traditional Adinkra cloth stamp — the heart-and-spiral rendering in the sankofa entry is the second, more abstract form. The bird's body faces forward while its head turns back to lift an egg from its own back: a compact image of retrieving what must not be left behind. Tracing the outer curve of the bird's neck and body produces a logarithmic spiral; ethno-mathematician Ron Eglash's Culturally Situated Design Tools research (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute) cites this as West African artisans applying, in cloth and craft, a curve that European mathematics would not formally describe until roughly two centuries after Descartes. That reading is one interpretation offered in the sources, not a settled attribution.
